A downloadable game

Hunchback Redux is a re-imagining of the arcade game Hunchback for the Commodore 64 home computer.

The game will see the player guide Quasimodo through multiple levels avoiding knights, arrows, cannonballs, spears and other hazzards in order to reach his beloved Esmeralda who has been captured close to Notre Dame and is now being held captive by an evil king in a castle in rural France.

The game is in early development and is provisinally scheduled for release in 2024.

  • 5 levels (digital version of the game), 7 levels (physical version of the game).
  • Additional stages between levels.
  • 4 levels of difficulty/game themes.
  • Optional in-game sound and music combinations.
  • Speech.
  • Single player - joystick only.
  • Works on PAL Commdore 64s, VICE 3.4+, Ultimate64e - other C64 compatibles still to be tested.
  • Digital .CRT download.
  • Free updates for any bug-fixed versions.

Of course I'm very much looking forward to it, but I hate the idea of the digital version having cut content, especially as people buy from itch.io to support developers such as yourself.

If it's an attempt to get around the cracking scene, it's not the right way to go about it - someone will distribute the "full" version regardless.

Games having bits shaved off and split into piecemeal chunks which vary by platform as a "bonus" or "exclusive content" is one of the many things that plague modern gaming. There's no place for it on retro platforms.

Just my $0.02

Good luck with all your planned developments!

Sorry, but I figure if you pay a lot more for the physical release, then people should get something a little bit extra. Rather than giving someone a sticker or a postcard in a big box, my preference would be a couple of extra levels.

People can make their choice on digital or physical.  But phsyical releases can sometimes be anywhere up to four times the cost of a digital release.

The digital isn't cut - the physical is just extra and any decision I make is nothing to do with the cracking scene at all.  I can leave the cracking scene to my solicitors should I wish to pursue any course of copyright infringement on any of my work.

Of course, I'm greatful for everyone who has downloaded and supported myself on my first game release.  I'm extremely appreciative for the positive comments and reviews.  I hope I can provide the C64 community with more games they can enjoy in the near future.  Thanks for you comments and your good luck message.
